Just finishing up a new review of The Fort for our Book of the Month page, I came away impressed with the author’s work, but somewhat less impressed by what I now know about Paul Revere. Maybe I had bought too much into the tales of my youth growing up, that is of stirring rides through the darkness, warning that the British were coming.
Nowing know the tarnish of one my heroes, perhaps its a good thing to step back and realize that even our forefathers were men like us, with bad habits, personalities and different approaches to what must have been a very upheaving time in which to live.
Does this take away from the greatness of our country or what has been accomplished since then (good or bad?). I don’t think so, but it does help us to undertand a bit more that history isn’t always what it seems nor what we want it to be. History is a reflection of us…..
In any event, take a look at the review, I’ve got some links to the book as well as information about some of the characters. It is really a good read and probably if you don’t want to buy it, your public library I’m sure has a copy.
Have a great day!
